yoga studio, cricket club of india
We won an invited design competition to redesign the existing yoga room at this prestigious members club. Its location under the stadium stands offers generous heights under a pitched slab, and a fantastic view of the historic cricket grounds of the Brabourne Stadium, where many international and first class cricket matches have been played. Our approach was guided by the intent to de-clutter and open up the space (and hopefully, the mind) by relocating storage required to the rear wall. The visual impact of the two free standing columns in the middle of the space was minimised using cladding in mirror and curved stainless steel in a mirror finish, and softening the edges and capitals to turn seamlessly into the ceiling. Fluted plaster profiles in the ceiling create a pattern referencing magnetic lines of force, gently parting to accommodate lighting and other functional requirements, whilst guiding the eye toward the expanse of green outside, accessed through timber and glass sliding-folding doors. The walls and floor in robust kota stone displaying natural colour variation. The primary users of this space will be practioners of the Iyengar school of yoga, which advocates the use of props to help achieve correct form. These take the form of timber blocks, ropes fixed to the wall with metal rings, bending boards, towels etc. The location of the room under the stadium stands means the room is slightly fan shaped, opening up toward the cricket grounds. As the side walls are not parallel to each other, the stainless steel inlay strips between joints in the stone flooring serve as a visual guide for users to help them stay perpendicular to the wall. The mirrored columns and cupboard shutters also allow one to check form during practice.
